1.8 million people in Germany are currently living with dementia. Without a therapeutic breakthrough, that number is projected to rise to 2.8 million by 2050. How can these patients be cared for with dignity? One thing is clear: the problems in care – both residential and home-based – are growing. The failures of the care system across German-speaking countries have been well-known for decades, and demographic trends will only make them worse as our societies continue to age.
This documentary looks for answers, following the daily lives of carers, family members, those affected by dementia, and researchers working close to the front lines – in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Through personal stories and an exploration of alternative care models, the film points toward solutions: a dementia shared-living project in Potsdam funded by a non-profit association, a carer training initiative in Austria, and a holistic care home near Zurich. What they share is a conviction that it is not enough to meet basic needs – people with dementia must be included in everyday life to preserve their dignity and independence.
