Synopsis

In the GDR, violent crime was not supposed to exist – it had no place in the socialist vision of humanity. When several children are murdered in East Berlin, the Volkspolizei comes under enormous pressure. The hunt for a serial offender becomes a race against time. Former investigators and eyewitnesses reconstruct this case and three others from the final years of the GDR – revealing how investigations were obstructed and perpetrators went undetected for years.

In the Prenzlauer Berg district of East Berlin, three children die in similar circumstances in the late 1980s. The trail leads to a convicted sex offender. In the GDR, there is no specialist therapy for offenders of his kind – only re-education through labour and ideological conditioning. Recidivism is high. When investigators confront him and he confesses, the case seems closed. But after reunification, the confession is ruled inadmissible.

In Halle-Neustadt, a sailor is beaten to death. Investigators assume a jealousy-driven killing; a suspect is convicted. But more deaths follow – a woman and her child, then another man. Only years later does it emerge that a single perpetrator is responsible, living undetected in the same tower block while an innocent man serves time for the sailor's murder.

In Großbeuthen near Potsdam, a 17-year-old schoolgirl disappears in 1986. Her body is found days later. A laboratory error clears the prime suspect, and the case goes unsolved for decades – until modern forensics finally brings the truth to light. In Lusatia, a mother and her two daughters die in a burning Trabant. The surviving husband claims it was an accident. Only the dying testimony of his wife and an exhaustive fire investigation expose what really happened.

Public reporting on serious crime was rare in the GDR – to protect the image of the state and its people. But even under socialism, people were murdered, robbed and deceived.
