Mark Michel has been working for over 20 years as a director, writer and journalist for ZDF, ARTE, SWR and MDR. After studying sociology in Jena and Leipzig and completing a Master's in Social Policy Analysis in Bath and Toronto, he trained as a video journalist at the Bauhaus University Weimar. His films have been screened at international festivals and received numerous awards – including the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Short Film Prize, the Goldener Spatz, the DRK Media Prize and the Grand Prix at the Belgrade International Film Festival.
He produces feature documentaries, documentary series and TV documentaries on socio-political themes: from shepherds in Peru, Uganda and Kyrgyzstan ("Hirten – Guardians of the Earth") to inclusion and forced labour in East German prisons, the care crisis and the pharmaceutical lobby. His work connects personal stories with structural questions and is made in diverse locations: in Saxony, India, Cambodia, Bosnia or Peru. He tells stories close to the people involved, drawing on a range of cinematic techniques.
